The Temple of Serapis and Pompey's PillarThe destruction of the temple of Serapis was authorized in 391 AD by an emperial
decree. The site still contains remains of the Temple
and may be visited. Pompey's Pillar, the most prominent feature of the Temple, was built
in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian.
In the middle ages, the Crusaders mistook it for Pompey's shrine, Cleopatra's guardian,
hence the name. |
